My story

Post a new topicby livingwith on Thu Sep 20, 2007 1:34 pm

I have Asperger’s Syndrome. My entire life, I’ve struggled to fit in, to be part of the crowd, but something has always made me say the wrong thing. To make the wrong face, whatever. I found this site, and I’m sharing this bit of my story because I want to belong… to something, anything. I thought maybe going to a place where people are like me, I might finally belong.. at least a little

I can empathize with you. I have a 22 yr old child Aspie. For the first 15 yrs of her life she was alone.
Just within the past couple of years she has been able to make new friends.

I have a few suggestions that may help you.

1. Find people that share your intense interest. My daughter's is Animae, there's an animae club at school.
2. After you've talking about your interest with this person for a while or you think that you have made on of "those" mistakes, tell this person that you have AS and part of it is not being able to read facial expressions, body language or understand inuendos or hidden meanings. I think you may find that some (not all) people will be interested and not shut you out.

I hope this helps

Good Luck

i have a seven year old grandson who is the light of my life. my daughter was recently told he had asperger and add. we always knew he was different, but it seemed to make him all the more special. i have had a hard time learning how to deal with him without breaking his heart, because for awhile i didn't understand his inability to "read" me. there is a wonderful movie my daughter had me watch called " running with scissers". its about a man with aspergers and is based on a true story. my grandson is homeschooled because teachers do not know how to teach a child with aspergers. it took my daughter two years to find a way to teach her son to read, but now he reads everything. its not that these children can't learn, they just learn in a different way. you should see him work a computer or playstation games. people with asperger are just like the rest of us, just wired differently.
