I have a 4 year old daughter with autism We have been told she has AS, she didn’t start walking until she was almost 3 and has just started talking almost 5. What I think is ironic is she can sing words that she can’t say if she’s just talking. My daughter is brilliant but now that i really read about AS i get worried because i just had another baby 4 months ago and now I’m worried that she may have the same thing if it truly is genetic. I know you are scared. I felt the same way about my oldest. She is 11 now, and has a rather typical life. Her psychologist has said that her prognosis in life is rather average. She is above average in intelligence, and well below her peers in social accumen. But, she is a joy.

What is most difficult, for me, has been to first let go of the image in my head of what she could expect out of life. Second, it has been difficult to replace that image of what to expect. In the last few years, I've come to realize that she will grow up, move out, go to college, perhaps find a significant other. She is well loved by a few friends, she isn't a 'pet' project to them, but an actual friend. She is liked my some teachers, and really annoys others. Her behavior is often inappropriate, but more acceptable than some other children, particularly the nasty ones.

Your new child has her own life... don't be scared, just enjoy your daughters for who they are. Try not to worry about who they aren't.
