New to Autism

Post a new topicby jeepinchic34 on Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:50 pm

Hi, My son goes for a diagnostic evaluation on Monday March 2. My husband a I are new to this. We didn't really suspect anything until he went to 4 year old kindergarten. His teacher at parent teacher conferences asked to get him tested. We did have him tested. Then went for his regular check up and the doctor recieved stuff from the school and asked some questions and referred us to some places. In the mean time we had his IEP meeting and they suggested that he go from his 4 year old kindergarten class to an Early Childhood class. Well that was all and well for us but poor Justin doesn't take well to change and he had a difficult time with the transition. He has good days and bad days. Sometimes there are more bad days then good. Now that we have been reading up on autism we are thinking back to the things when he was younger and the stuff he did, we wonder why it was not discovered before. Is it very difficult to diagnos or did we just miss the signs? If we did miss the signs, they should really have the warning signs posted all over so that people can see them. After all this the two places the doctor referred us to are not in his health insurances network, so then we were referred to another doctor who can't get us in till the end of April. I know it is going to be march soon but this was all scheduled in January and we felt that that was just to long. We did somemore checking on the internet and found WEAP (Wisconsin Early Autism Project) and now he is going in on Monday. Boy is this a long process, there should be a better way for children to be tested!! Well I thank you for reading my long post.

Hello...
You mentioned WEAP...
I presume you are from Wisconsin... Where in WI do you live?
I live in west-central WI, near Eau Claire.
We have a friend with a son that has mild Autism/Asperger's
Feel free to contact me.
I have Neurofibromatosis (NF1), and may have some form of autism, but have not been clinically diagnosed as such.
