Father: Brain Tumor Surgery

Post a new topicby greene2531 on Sun May 04, 2008 8:14 am

My father recently had brain tumor surgery on Dec 27 2007. We are now in our 5th month of recovery and still no major advancement in recovery. In March, while in Winston Salem, he was showing signs of swallowing and signs of recovery but for some reason has declined especially now that he is now in a nursing home. I feel that he is at a level between comotose and showing signs of recovery IF someone would give him a chance. It seems that we are in the "middle" of the road so to speak and no one is willing to help him. I feel that is at a "subacute" level needing care but doctors will not go to the right or left. We as a family are not willing to give up because we do see signs that he could be helped. We don't know where to turn or who to talk to. Has anyone had this same similar situation and what did you do to get help for your family member. His neuro surgeon gave a prognosis of recovery in 3 months and still says that it will take a long time but he does have a chance for recovery. The doctors in the nursing home says he will never recover and want to keep him doped up saying that they just want to keep him comfortable. We are so frustrated. I've done research and know what needs to be done but can't get through to the "system" (social workers, doctors, etc.) to make any kind of advancement. Please, can someone provide good information on what we can do and where we go from here? Currently, he is opening his eyes (slowly but is opening them), he is having trouble swallowing but can do so slowly), he did suffer a stroke during surgery so we know he needs rehab. He did suffer some brain trauma to the front lobes of the brain so we know he has to be re-trained. Thanks.
