How to deal with the deep feelings of helplessness

Post a new topicby arae on Tue Jul 01, 2008 4:30 pm

my husband was diagnosed with non small-cell lung cancer adenocarcinoma, in August 2005. He was then diagnosed with metastic brain cancer in April 2007. He has had neuro-surgery, 6 weeks of broad-spectrum radiation, and two stereo-tactic surgeries. No more surgery or radiation can be given. He had the last stereo-tactic procedure in April, one year from the initial diagnosis.

I find myself going crazy with family who keep pretending that some miracle is going to happen and he's going to beat this. He's lost 75 pounds, doesn't eat, drinks huge amounts of vodka, is very depressed and often times becomes verbally abusive. He is 61 years old and was diagnosed with three brain tumors, two were removed surgically and one in the left parietal lobe was treated with the stereo-tactic surgery as it could not safely be reached with normal neuro-surgery.

We've got a dr's appointment in two days where he plans to ask the doctor what will happen if he just discontinues the meds. We will also get the results of PET and MRI scans for the brain and body. My daughter who is 34 years old called me today, she wants to go to the doctor with us and ask him about sea plankton. My sister, his sister and my daughter act as though they do not hear anything we tell them that the doctor says. I'm thoroughly exhausted, at the end of my rope and feel rather foolish having my daughter accompany us to this discussion with a fairy tale attitude.

Can anyone say anything that will help me understand this better?
