Define culture

Post a new topicby rn_erin on Mon Nov 05, 2007 2:45 pm

I am a registered nurse and I am continuing on with my education. I am writing a paper " Serving the needs of Minority Populations" I chose lesbians as the minority culture. I am however heterosexual, and am having difficulty defining the lesbian culture. Other than the obvious female to female intimacy preference what are the other aspects that define the "culture"?

Culture defines as the values and norms. Values is a relatively general beliefs that either define different theoretical and the culture of people theirselves around the world, while Norms on the other hand is relatively precise rule specifying the behaviors are permitted and prohibited.

I hope this will help you widen your knowledge what is culture about.

We tend to see what we want to see, there are really many things that can define culture. We are the one who can make our own if we want.

I would aver that currently the gay groups are a transitional 'culture'. Unlike hetero's who have been the accepted social norm in western civilization, homo's are only now starting to succeed at carving out a customary social niche. In this effort many gays chose to call attention to their plight by being overly prominent, a tactic that I feel backfired more than they expected. But I think this would generally define the current state of any gay culture. They are struggling to define a lifestyle that would be considered culturally acceptable. It is, if you will, a struggle for hetero's as well as they need to change their perspectives on the gay culture. You might structure your paper with this hypothesis and conduct your field research using this perspective.
