post surgery complications

Post a new topicby tintern on Wed Feb 27, 2008 7:09 am

4 weeks ago I had surgery on both hands. one is now fine, the other feels worse than ever. I have extreme feeling in the three fingers normally afftected to the point that i can not even touch water as the fingertips feel so painful. The doctors have said to give it time and i am on meds but would like to here from anyone that has had surgery so i can make my own decision as to whether this is common. many thanks all.

Did you receive OT after surgery? Is the painful hand better since your post?

I had ct surgery in 2004 and had a very strange complication. My thumb, even while it was still splinted right after surgery, felt like it wasn't attatched right. My surgeon was a friend of mine, and when i told him about the weird feeling, he said no one had ever said that before. that was the only way i could describe it to him. anyway, my thumb continued to have this strange sensation even after physical therapy. and i did have some extreme feeling (and still do), but not to the extent that you are explaining. Anyway! it turned out, when i saw another doctor, that the nerve going to my thumb had been cut in the surgery. they found this out by doing an exploratory surgery. the new doctor microscopically reattatched the nerve for me, but i still have some problems. my thumb has limited motion and if i tap it on something, i have extreme tingling and pain. it sounds like you could possibly be having some type of nerve problem. I wonder if one of your neves got nicked or something. check it out, because the longer you wait, the less chance the nerves can be repaired. hope this helps, and good luck!

I had surgery on jan12,2009 and have had pain even since. It is my right hand and have not been able to work since. I see the doctor every two weeks and do pt twice a week. it feels like my fingers are not attacted to my hand. just using th remote control for tv sends pain up my wrist and arm. the doctor said this has never happened to any of his patients. I have a scare tissue buildup and it hurts all the time . He said if he does the surgey again to remove the scare tissue it will do it all over again and it would be done for nothing. I can not even open a bottle of water . have loss my grip. do not know what to do. last week he gave me a shot of cortisone, could not use my hand for three days it was totally numb. He tells me how he was trained by the best doctors and this should not happen. Well it did and now do I have to live with it. I live where there are only a few hand surgerns. i just don't know what to do.

Hey. I had scar buildiup too, but another hand surgeon went in and removed it. As far as i know, it hasn't come back, at least not like it was. It sounds like maybe you do need to see someone else, anyone else and get a 2nd opinion. I also got a blood clot right after the first, botched surgery, supposedly from flailing around while waking up from anesthesia. My 1st doc went back in right away before i woke up and removed the clot, but that's when he cut my nerve. Then, by the time i saw the 2nd doctor, he did exploratory surgery because x-rays weren't showing him anything, and all the scar tissue had built up. To me, it felt like i had never had the surger in the 1st place, other than my thumb not working right. After he removed the scar tissue and reattached my nerve, it really did feel a lot better. I won't ever have full use of my thumb again, but at least the pain is better. I would go to someone else and maybe have exploratory surgery. I know it's risky to have surgery, but if they find something, it might be worth it. Good luck, and let me know how you do!
