how to find a therapist who specializes in communication

Post a new topicby sarahkatzin on Tue Apr 21, 2009 11:55 pm

My son Yaakov has very involved CP. He has no independent mobility, cannot sit or stand without supportive devices, does not have controlled use of his hands, has very poor oral motor skills and therefore receives his nutritional needs via a gastric tube. However, he is very "with it" in terms of connecting with people - not in the regular way, as he is unable to speak, but by smiling when he is happy, acting cranky when unhappy, showing pleasure when familiar people come near him, showing interest when read to or spoken to or when watching a movie. He also has certain people, like his father or his older brother, who he expects certain things from, namely that they give him a ride on their shoulders. If they come in the room and do not do that, he makes a big fuss. We would very much like Yaakov to have the opportunity to express himself more. I know there is a lot of technology that we could utilize for him, ie computers, special switches etc. How do I find a therapist in my locality who specializes in this?
