Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

Hello. My husband has Charcot Marie Tooth Disease. We are considering starting a family, and I'm wondering how likely it is that his disease will be passed onto our child? He was adopted, so we have no idea what runs in his family. I would like to be prepaired if there's a high percentage rate that this will pass on to our baby. Does anyone have some answers for me?

There's a definite chance you can pass it on if you're thinking of starting a family. It's all genetics and obviously, your future child would have to pick up the gene from your husband. I've heard that there's a 50% chance you can pass it on...I was worried about that with my daughter but there are no signs yet.

My Husband and my Son both have CMT. My husband did not find out he had the disorder until Doctors diagnosed my son at age 3. The Genetisist told us the chances were 50/50. Also, My sons genetisist told us there is a way to insure the next child wont have CMT. Using Gene Therapy. We chose not to have any more because we are older parents. Talk to a genetic Doctor to insure your child will not carry the gene. Good Luck!!!!!!

If you know your sub-type, you 'may' be able to find a lab that does prenatal testing by going to this site, finding your sub-type in the charts and IF they have a link to Clinical Testing available for that one, click on it. Some labs offer the prenatal testing for some forms of CMT. Some forms are still only available by researchers.

Hey I am 29 yrs old and I have cmt probaly one of the worst ones I have not got gentic testing done however I had several other test done including reconstrutive surgery on my feet because of the foot drop I also had a really intense hip surgery.I walk with a really bad limp but I did decide to have a child he is now 4 and prefect as can be I think the best thing we can do is to trust god!I am not sure if I helped you at all but I hope so.Good Luck

In my previous post, I was just trying to answer the question of how likely CMT was to be passed on.

In my own personal opinion, I am very happy that pre-natal testing was NOT available to my parents..

With what my mother had gone through with her CMT, I most likely would not have ever been born... and I sure would rather be here than not.. LOL
