Coma

My nephew has been in a coma for just over 3 weeks. he is beginig to open his eyes and vocalize and move his body around more. How do we know if he is emerging back to a conscious state or to a vegetative state? I can't seem to figure this out from my reading online so far. I would very much like to know.
His coma was from TBI, if that makes a difference.
