Dementia

My father has suffered most of life in and out of hospitals with depression
He has been on different meds for it and shock treatment. Now at the age of
61 he is diagnosed with Dementia.
How do I know if this is true ? It baffles me because he talks, remembers things from when he was 16 yrs old, & he loves to be active.
