Can codeine use cause dementia?

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun May 26, 2002 2:07 am

My mother has been on tylenol with codeine #3 for over 30 years. she is now 74 and has dementia. her doctor has taken her off codeine can this cause dementia? and if it does now that she is off it will she get better? She is currently seeing a family practice doctor should she see a specialist too?

Tylenol with codeine (and other narcotics) can effect cognitive functioning. Withdrawal from those medications can also cause changes. I would have her see a neurologist to fully investigate the diagnosis of dementia.
