Dementia

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue May 21, 2002 11:53 am

We have bee told that my father has second level Dementia. What is this and how does it differ from say first level? He has other problem along with this, and it started about a month ago when he had surger for the main artery on the left side of his neck. They said something trigger this and that he had it before the surgery just not this bad. He has a feeding tube in now, because he has not been able to eat since the surgery it this all part of the problem? Thanks for any info you can give.

If the problems started all after the surgery, it is unlikely that he has a dementia, but the cognitive problems may be casued by a stroke, lack of blood flow to the brain, medications, metabolic problems, depression etc. All reversible causes should be evaluated. I have never heard the terminology "second level" used before.

Laura--my husband had surgery too, after that it was all down hill, didn' tknow he had dementia. Eating IS the problem now. He is allergic to teh appitite pill to our dismay. he is eating 3 times a day but he is not hungry, he does it to stay alive.
I don't know what kind of Dementia this is called after surgery and the loss of weight and doesn't want to eat. He has involantary movements too and his hands go back, hold them funny. His mind is ok, memory ok. How about your Aunt? Aricept didn't work or help, Nmaneda to help communicate didn't help. I am at a loss. Do you have any furthr info for me you can share?
it was sudden here...
Thanks Laura...I hope you are doing well. I will look for youhere.
