father has hallucinations, periods of impaired motor skills, etc. long after discontiMy 65 yr. old father has hallucinations, periods of impaired motor skills, frequent urination, long after discontinuing drugs believed to have started this.
History:He went to dr. for feeling of band around head, pain/numbness in right arm and right leg. (this began after going on lipitor to lower cholestrol for 1 y...off now for over 1 yr) He wanted to be sure he was not having strokes. He also has problems w/ constipation. They asked a few questions, he missed a couple minor ones and put on Aricept for Altiemers. My parents were disbelieving, shocked. He went off it soon, said stomach hurt and did not believe he had Altiemers. Sent to neurologists who diagnosed with Parkinsons and Narcolepsy (he catnaped alot during day) based only on observation. Still did not believe and analysis seemed very limited. Took medication - Requip and Amphetimine. Went off Requip after 2 weeks and his condition quickly deteriorated severly. Started having hallucinations at times and some confusion in recognizing wife, paranoid about wallet, thinking in a hotel, bloated abdomen, legs & feets swelling -edema, nightmares, sometimes diffulty dressing/bathing. He has completely normal periods as well--it comes and goes. They have done blood test, abdomen scan, mri scan of neck, etc. by drs and found nothing except the ck count mildly elevated to 238, then 260. Primary doctor gave a sleeping pill and zyprexa to help but problems got worse. He is now on nothing as of 6 days ago. Seems dehydrated, sometimes drools and corners of mouth cracked. Up all night roaming and urinating often in wrong places. Could he have negative reactions to misdiagnosed drugs: Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome???? We are looking/hoping for a reversible cause. My mother is afraid to go to another neurologist, but we are trying to get her to go..afraid a reversible cause may become permanent. He was checked recently for rhabdomolysis by a rheumotologist but he thinks it will be negative (a long shot due to high CK and fact he was on statins -lipitor). He also checking for Lupus b12 count, vasculitis, rhuemitism but this dr. recommended neurologist also. Thanks for any input.
