Ct scan dye flubbedHi there.. Today I had a CT of abdom. with and without contrast. I was asked to drink a drink w/ iodine in it (LOTS) then as the tech was putting in the dye IV, she got a strange look on her face.. and stopped in immediately. SOmehow the dye went into my lower arm swelling it, can creating a "pocket" of sorts. Temporarily my entire arm when "tingling/numb" i never lost feeling but tingled and hard to use. this dissappeared in about 5-10 minutes. Procedure was done in left arm, no problem. MY question is this, although the tech told me that the dye that went down arm is harmless, there is still quite a bit of swelling (entire forearm) and tenderness in that area that created the "pocket". I have been putting hot compresses on it as advised., but just needed to know if I am any potential danger from this dye?. How will if effect my body, since it" missed" the vein..??? and is the swelling normal in such a mistake? I just want to set my mind at ease that I dont have any potential for clotting or whatever from this, tech did not seemed to concerned but it looks horrible. I had the test done about 4 1/2 hours ago. Thank for your time in whatver you can offer me on this.
Re: Ct scan dye flubbedBy now the swelling should be down, I hope. This is not an uncommon occurrence during a pump injection, but that does not make it any more pleasant. Things to watch out for... infection in the soft tissues (cellulitis) and infection in the veins (phlebitis). As long as the swelling goes down and you have no pain, tenderness, redness and/or tenderness, it should be okay. Otherwise, call your doctor.
