Afraid of having children

Post a new topicby livingwith on Wed May 07, 2008 1:16 pm

I had my first seizure episode 3 years ago, at the age of 23. I had just graduated from college and was living at home with my mother and was stressed out trying to find a job. The only thing I remember is sitting on the couch with my Mom, and then I had some weird “Deja vous” sort of feeling in my head and all of these images started flashing from the past…I then completely blacked out ( my mother said that I cocked my neck back and made a weird gurgling noise and went into ...Read the full article

do not be afraid of the most beautiful gift ever. I am a 29 year old woman with 3 beautiful daughters. Ages 10, 6, and 4. I have been seizure free for 4 years ... untill this past saturday i woke to emergency personnel and my scared boyfriend standing over me. I had a full Grand mal seizure.. again. I havent taken my meds in 2 years so i guess i kinda asked for it. but now i started my meds AGAIN they make me feel like a zombie but untill my body gets used to them i guess i will have to deal with it. what is really not cool is that i just bought a new car 2 weeks ago and i cant drive it for six months. that is PA state law. you have a seizure you lose your liscence for half a year... HARSH!! But I guess it is for my own safety.

But anyway. if you take your meds having children should be no problem. I am living proof . I have epilepsy and 3 beautiful, HEALTHY (most importantly healthy) daughters. So good luck to you and take care. Jamie

Hi, I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 14 and I am now 32. I got married when I was 18 and have had two very healthy children since then. I even had a seizure while pregnant once and the dDr assured me the baby was very safe in its sack. My kids are now 12 &14 and at the top of thier class. My son is student body president and my daughter is treasuer of her school. They are both very athletic and have grown up knowing that mom needs her meds or she might get sick. I have taken great care of them and now that they have witnessed a seizure they try to care for me as well. They are only at one half of one percent more likely than the avarage person to have a seizure themselves. If they do it will probably be in the next 2 years. You are at greater risk while pregnant and the bggining of your cycle to have a seizure because of all the hormones. You may want to talk to your Dr if you should drive while pregnant. I did not. I did not have another problem until my kids were in preschool. I think it is very safe and don't cheat yourself from motherhood and a happy life because of fear. That has been my greatest life lesson epilepsy has taught me-do not let fear control your life, and it is alright to ask for help. We can't do everything all the time. Good Luck!!!
