seizures in my sleep?

Post a new topicby iamwilley83 on Mon Apr 13, 2009 5:37 pm

Hi my name is Gabriel,
I have had brain surgeory for sarcoidosis I had two seizures prior to my surgeory which is the reason for my having a catscan and MRI. they thought that I had a brain tumor but upon pulling it out surgically they found that it was a sarcoid. I have had multiple seizures since then, occuring each month year round. they only occur when I am sleeping. they are grand mal siezures. I wake up way late in the day becuase of this and my mouth is numb and tastes like thow up. I usually bite my tongue or cheek, have a huge headache, sore all over and very sluggish. prior to my surgeory I had two seizures during the day a month apart. After the first won I was rushed to the hospital and they did a stomach scope and found no cause for it and sent me home. A month later I had another one during the day, again being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, the doctor did a catscan and found out that I had a growth in my head. After having an MRI the decided to do surgeory. After removing it I have had seizures every month while I am sleeping. I only have them once a month... (kinda like a period but I'm a guy) lol. I can't find anything on why I only have them at night and not during the day. seizure medication did help me at all I still had them while I was sleeping. does anyone know where to look to find such information on why I have them during the night?

I have been told by my best doctor that seizures are more common at night because of natural characteristics of sleep. Something like this: at night, the brain calms down, has less input, and goes into a natural rhythm of REM/non-rem sleep. The unusual activity that causes epilepsy is less likely to be suppressed or overwritten during the night. Meds that help me during the day don't prevent me from having night seizures sometimes. But that is something I've learned to live with.

Do your seizures follow a strict periodic cycle, or are they just happening about once a month? Keep a calender if you don't have one already.

Do you like your neurologist? If not find one you like. I like one closer to my age, one who will talk to me and answer my questions. Make sure you are writing down the things you want to ask, and you don't have to wait for an appointment, call them and ask.

Hi! My name is Ali,

I agree with previous replies.

I have a history of seizure during sleep too. It is bad to know after waking.

Since, I begin taking potassium syrup with medicine and little limbs (hands & feet) exercise before going to sleep. I note reduction in my seizure.

Epilepsy is different person to person. Try it, may possible it will work.
