Diet Coke and Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Post a new topicby ktsheep on Mon Jul 28, 2008 1:37 pm

I am recovering from a mild case of GBS and I wondering if anyone has heard of diet drinks interferring with recovery. I am a serious Diet Coke drinker and my husband (an ICU nurse) believes that drinking these drinks is interferring with my recovery. What do you all hear about this!

Hi! For any desease you should eat and/or drink as natural as you can. And definitely diet coke is not a natural drink. It contains a lot of acids that not only interfer with any desease recuperation, it is actually interfering with most of your biological processes. I want you to know that the sodas interfer with your calcium abosorption, so what it means that you are very propense to adquire in the future osteosphorosis. If I was you, I would listen to my husband.

Absolute nonsense!

There is absolutely NO evidence that caffeine (the main problem in these drinks) will cause any direct problem with GBS recovery.

The demyelination process is reversed by schwann cells being able to produce myelin again, and this is not affected by caffeine. In fact, the stimulant properties may arguably be beneficial in small amounts.

Having said that, if you are drinking huge amounts of caffeine, it will interfere with your sleeping patterns which are important in GBS recovery and it's generally not a good thing to have a lot of.

Ease up, but don't stop. You've had a crappy time as is, don't cut something out that you are able to enjoy a bit!!!!

My 2 cents about this is we have been looking into eating an anti-inflammatory diet for my husband who has GBS.The diets we have found online recommends excluding artificial sweeteners. I do not know the science behind this but we are going to seek a clinical nutritionist in our area (upstate NY) to get some ideas of what to and what not to eat to assist his healing. He loves his diet coke too but has been drinking seltzer for his bubbely fix and lost of water.

Are you serious? I had a sever case of GBS in 2004 I couldn't even open my eyes at one point the whole nine yards, I 've never heard of such a thing. The only thing I've ever been told was they didnt recomend me having an epodoral when I had my last child. Drinking diet coke may not be the healthiest thing but I seriously doubt it would effect GBS/recovery of it.
