Guillain-Barre Syndrome

I have a co-worker that contracted GBS from a flu shot. He is in his early 40's. His recovery has been fairly swift, 11 weeks and he is back to work 1/2 days. He was a smoker at the time and quit due to his inablity to continue smoking during his hospital stay. Now that he is out he is right back to this bad habit. My question is...is smoking slowing his recovery proccess? I really need to know so that he can have the best possible chance to recover quicker. His recovery has slowed since he started smoking again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
