GBS or other?Dear Doctor,
I am currently experiencing mild tingling
sensations in my hs , to a lesser
extent, my feet. At times I also feel a
burning sensation in m. has been
going on about two weeks.
My physiatrist ordered an EMG nerve
conduction tests on my upper extremities,
is to be done in a week.
A recent MRI showed disc degeneration at
C4-5, C5-6, C6-7, moderate bulge
at C5-6 mild bulge at C4-5 C6-7.
I am concerned about it wher
sensations I am having could be from GBS not from disc problem. I've read
several case histories of GBS some of
m started out like mine.
I must say I am quite anxious about
all of am very afraid of is
going to happen next.
Should I just wait around a week
see tests show, or should some-
thing else be done sooner? Could my long-
sting disc problems be cause of
se odd sensations? will nerve
tests show if GBS is cause? or
things could be causing if not
discs or GBS?
Thank any help can give me.
JP
Re: GBS or other?Thank you for your question. GBS is a disorder that usually involves the motor nerves and roots, but you are correct that in many cases prior to the onset of the ascending paralysis, individuals develop sensory symptoms. There are many causes of tingling and numbness other than GBS, and it is certainly possible the cervical abnormalities may be causing your symptoms. However, if this is a new and developing symptoms, a full neurological examination is warranted, as certain findings on the exam (such as subtle early weakness or loss of reflexes) can suggest GBS. The EMG/NCV can indicate findings consistent with GBS, and spinal fluid analysis is also usually performed. GOo dluck.
