question about protein levels and cpkHi my husband was diagnosed with GBS and then to CIDP because of his numbness and weakness. Testing showed abnormal emg and elevated protein levels in spinal fluid and elevated CPK levels. now they think he was misdiagnosed and now maybe has polymyositis (muscle disorder)
his dr. said he thinks this because ususally you do not see elevated CPK levels with CIDP, but can you have elevated protein levels in spinal fluid with polymyositis? and can you have elevated CPK with CIDP? Thankyou for your time. We are desperately trying to find out what is wrong with him because he is so weak meaning his muscles. oh i am sorry one more thing his hands and fingers swell can that be related to either. thankyou again.
Re: question about protein levels and cpkThe findings on a carefully done EMG/NCV test should really help to differentiate the two disorders, as polymyositis is a disorder affecting muscles, and GBS involves the peripheral nerves and nerve root structures. CPK is not usually elevated in GBS. However, depending on how high the level was, things such as an intramuscular injection can cause an elevtion in CPK. Spinal fluid protein is generally not elevated in polymyositis. Protein can be elevated in diabetics for example. Hopefully you are seeing a neuromuscular specialist who can help determine what t eh underlying problem is. I wish him a speedy recovery.
