Treatment for GBS can lead to kidney failure?

Post a new topicby mariono on Mon Jun 01, 2009 3:12 pm

I came down with GBS on 24th December 2008, was admitted to hospital and the doctors could not diagnose what was the problem. It was only on 1st January, when a Neurologist saw me that GBS was diagnosed. My Neurologist said I had a mild attack, as I was only paralysed from the armpits to the knees. I could always breathe and swallow. Becuase of this he did not want to give me IVIG or Plasmapheresis as he said a complication of this could be kidney damage. He said he would hate to give me the treatment, have the GBS improving a bit sooner than it would have, but have to have dialysis for the rest of my life. I see from this forum that most people seem to be given one or both of these treatments and have not heard anything bad resulting from such treatments.

I have never heard this before! I must admit, we have had so much information in the last few weeks, but non of it has said anything like this. My Dad has been in hospital for 6 weeks suffering with GBS and they gave him both treatments within a short time of each other. Internally, he's doing fine, so I don't think anyone needs to worry!
