Headaches and swelling of the eyesI'm a 40 year old male. I recently start having headaches that is followed by swelling and red eyes. I feel pressure behind my eyes and pain when my eyes move from one side to the other. I have had two MRIs done 4 months apart as well as a MRA, ultrasound of my jugular veins and everything shows to be 'normal'. My neurologist put me on steroid and it helped for a little while [2 months] but the headache is back. I've seen an eye doctor and my eyes are normal as well with 20/20 vision.
Often when I get these headaches they persist for 2-3 weeks non-stop and can only be controlled through medication. Often my eyes would swell to the point that they are almost completely closed and my eyes would turn blood read. This also makes it difficult to focus where often I have to look at an object for about a second before my eyes start to focus. I have been pretty healthy up to this point and I lead a fairly active life. I workout 4-5 days a week and run at least 3 miles a day. I'm 5' 9" and 150 lbs. My cholesterol is in the 180 range last time it was tested. Every doctor I see tells me that I'm healthy and they don't seem to be able to diagnose the reason why I'm having these systems.
Re: Headaches and swelling of the eyessounds like your doctors have ruled out most of the bad things, tumors, etc. I know many patients who have commented on after getting Botox their headaches and migraines improved, I don't know the cause of your problem but Botox may help with the symptoms, good luck
Re: Headaches and swelling of the eyesYour docs probably have already done the following labs: sed rate (ESR), and c-reactive protein (CRP) to rule out temporal arteritis, a cause of headaches helped by prednisone.
An ophthalmologist may have something to offer if you haven't already tried that. Also -- an allergist? Any chance nutrasweet, MSG, or something like that might be a trigger?? Good luck.
Re: Headaches and swelling of the eyesThank you all for your reply.
I did do an allergy test and came up negative for most but dust mites and some type of grass. I did also see an ophthalmologist with no negative results. I will mention to my doctor about ESR and CRP to see if that is something that should be done and if I stand a chance to benefit from the tests. As far as NutraSweet, I do not use it. I also stopped all caffeine intake and limit my sugar intake since the headaches. What puzzles me the most is that every doctor that I see gives me a clean bill of health.
