Migraine TriggersSodium nitrite...have you heard of it? It is in all kinds of sausage, hot dogs, COLD CUTS, anything smoked, ham or any precooked meats. For me, it is a definite migraine if I eat it - can't even have a bite.
MSG tends to be a trigger for me BUT, I seem to be able to handle small quantities. I say that because it is in ALMOST EVERYTHING - I never eat it on purpose because I know I'll eat it by accident. It's in breadcrumbs and broth, seasoned fries, crispy chicken, frozen mozzarella sticks, frozen dinners, cold cuts, anything flavored such as rice, noodles, prepared beans, basically any appetizers or fried foods you get in the frozen section of your grocer and at fast food restaurants. If you cannot have MSG, do not eat at fast food restaurants. Be careful, if the ingredients label says any kind of broth or stock was used, then it very probably has MSG in it. If it is breaded or battered, it most likely has MSG in it. Do not eat any soup anywhere AND know what products contain MSG because I have found that most restaurants do not have a clue. Avoid gravies unless you make it yourself and DO NOT use bouillion cubes. Avoid dishes that may be flavored with chicken broth - ask how vegies like spinach are prepared. And if you like sushi, do not eat eel. It comes already prepared in an MSG enhanced sauce. Do not have eel sauce on any rolls. If a restaurant says homemade - it doesn't mean a thing. I just wanted to share with others what has made a difference in my life. Have fun reading labels and asking lots of food preparation questions!
