effects of alcohol on HDMy sister in law has early onset huntingtons and is drinking heavily. She also has 3 kids the 2 young ones are living with her they are 3 and 6 the 13 year old is with someone else. She doesn't feed them half the time is this as much a concern as I feel that it is?
Re: effects of alcohol on HDIt certainly is of serious concern. You should notify authorities who can help the children, and your sister-in law, and the situation sounds dangerous. She may or may not be able to judge that the things she is doing are very dangerous.

Re: Re: effects of alcohol on HDIt sounds to me like your sister-in-law may have been "Self-Medicating". I realize that didn't help the children, but may explain some of the "why".
And too, this could have possibly have been a cry for help. Hopefully, I'm assuming you have already sought out help for the children, since I am just comming upon reading this at such a later date! Re: Re: Re: effects of alcohol on HDThank you for your reply the children are actually in state custody. And my Sister in Law is rapidly succumbing to the disease. I also think the youngest child who is 6 years old now is showing some signs of childhood Huntingtons it is very hard to get anyone to listen. Can you discribe some of the symtoms of childhood hd

Re: Re: Re: Re: effects oIt's really sad about this family. Hopefully, these children are receiving Medicad.
Usually, when it is said that Huntington's appears at a young age - I think it is around the early twenties, but I'm sure anything is possible. If you feel that is the case__ someone needs to get a good social worker behind the child's well-being and maybe push for testing to make sure of the issues being dealt with. Anything of this nature is always harder with young children, just for the fact that they can't always describe or explain what they are feeling or what is happening to them. Also it may be helpful to keep a journal/diary of situations, events and symptoms experienced by the child. Sometimes the charting will help you get the needed attention in the area needed. Also, I think it is very important to find out because they may be able to do some things to slow down the progression of the disease! Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: effects oThank you for your reply actually the children are receiving medicaid and right now they have just put her one adderal (not sure if that is how it is spelled) As far as the social worker that is not a good situation.
The six year old is already obsessed with sex she has two sexual harrasment charges filed against her at school and is very anxious and obsessed with everything. My sister who they are placed with I hope is trying to get her into a therapist who has dealt with a family who has Huntingtons. If the caseworker approves it but as it is she is already seeing a therapist for the sexual misconduct. But another issue is she knows how to manipulate people and is making up stories to curry sympathy. Thank you again for your reply [quote] It's really sad about this family. Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: eThis is so sad and can I tell you my true concern here is for that six year old little person who is unable to protect herself!
Honestly, it sounds so much like she is a case of a Sexually Abused child. Someone needs to take some very serious consideration in this situation for the child's mental health and well being. Her behavior sounds much too old for her age and for her to be able to act out this sexual misconduct is because she has MORE than likely been introduced to these types of behaviors. She is just TOO young to just know about these types of things on her own. Children start their lives out, "SEXUALLY STERILE". At that age they don't even have Hormones to encourage that type of behavior - therefore it must have been introduced to her. The acting out is a DEFINITE cry for "HELP" and for someone to see and understand what has or is happening to her. Internal scars affect these children for a lifetime and affect them in psychological ways you would never suspect or even imagine. Someone also needs to find out who is watching this child or who has access and provide protection. And very sad to say. . . sometimes the Offender can be a close trusted friend, boyfriend, family member, Uncle, Brother, Grandfather, Dad, neighbor or someone "Totally" unsuspected. {This is the benefit of involving a professional}-It may be a shock to the protective, adult figure helping the child and can also be traumatic and a professional knows how to deal with the situation and with the childs mental health. (Remember this child is ONLY 6 years old and the abuse is confusing and the child does not understand and then is also being disciplined.) Someone with knowledge of how to work with these children-(such as talking or role playing with dolls is a good way to get the child to talk about what has happened and with who or the use of a book that opens up the subject and allows the child to speak about this.) My suggestion is to use the assistance of a professional and to definitely be in a safe place where this child can feel protected. This child may have been threatened or told who knows what, (?) Whatever, this child needs help, and some protection from a trustworthy adult and it needs to happen immediately. This child needs more than sympathy, she needs Empathy and she needs more than just a social worker. She needs a professional versed in this area! Please help her anyway you can! Sincerely . . . Juvenile Huntington's Symptoms/ {Also on this site}............ ***Early signs of juvenile Huntington’s disease often include subtle changes in handwriting and a rapid decline in school performance. The child may develop seemingly minor movement disorders, such as slowness, rigidity, tremor, or rapid muscle twitching. Other early signs of disease may include these changes: * Behavioral changes * Difficulty learning new things * Speech difficulties Children under the age of 15 may experience recurrent seizures and akinesia—muscle rigidity and stiffness. Children from 15 to 18 years of age tend to manifest the same symptoms of Huntington’s disease as adults. ***Just thought this may be helpful in realizing something else is going on with the six year old besides Juvenile Huntingtons! Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: eAgain thank you for your response. She has been seeing a phycologist who specializes in sexual abuse in children. I had been telling the case workers and other counselors for quite a few years I thought she showed signs when she was only two years old and no one would listen to me.
And sad to say but the Phycologist she is currently seeing is not much help either. thank you [quote] This is so sad and can I tell you my true concern here is for that six year old little person who is unable to protect herself.
