What can I do?

Post a new topicby zacemmdrazac on Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:25 am

My dad, two uncles and an aunt had/have it. All have died except aunt. Don't really want to get tested since there is no cure. Mostly concerned for my wife and children. My brother thinks he may have it. I think he's a hypochondriac. What are the earliest symptoms? My Dad wasn't diagnosed until he was in his fifties. He died at age 68. One uncle died of leukemia at age 25. He must have had it because his son is showing symptoms. Another uncle died around the same age as my Dad. My aunt is younger than them but is now close to there age and has been digressing symptomatically.

I think it is important for you to be tested so that you be proactive in your healthcare. First make sure you have life insurance and long term care insurance if you can get it. If you test positive you need to be taking care of your body now and there are things you can do that may delay the onset or the progression of symtpoms. There are a lot of studies and clincial trials being done that may benefit you. My daughter was just diagnosed at 17 with early onset of adult type HD. We had no idea people could get it this young. She is going to therapy and taking supplements to help keep her strong and to protect her brain as much as possible. While it's true there is no cure, doing nothing to fight against it would be an even greater tragedy. Fight the good fight!!
