Hi I am new to this forum...I am a foster parent and just got a 2 yr old boy with Hydrocephalus last night and would like any adive anyone can give..He does have a shunt and goes to childerns hospital every two months for check-ups. He is cross eyed ..Does that come along with this and can it be corrected??

Hi, I'm a 16 year old girl and I have hydrocephalus as well as a lot of medical problems like epilepsy, diabetes and low blood pressure. I was also born 8 weeks early with exomphalous.
My hydrocephalus puts me in hospital about twice a month and it isn't helped by the fact that my epilepsy sometimes makes my brain swell also. Hydrocephalus, after a while, is quite easy to live with. I have coped for 16 years and I will never let it get me down. It's easier to cope with than my diabetes and epilepsy which have left me in comas for weeks at a time.

My son is fixing to be 9 years old, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus when he was 6 wks old. We have had our fair share of shunt malfunctions and revisions so I can say this much....as long as your newly foster son has a shunt that is well functioning then his hydrocephalus should stay under control, but you should always keep your eyes open for any signs of a malfunction. You mentioned crossed eyes, well I do have a family member that had that problem as a child growing up. She wore corrective lenses that pulled her eyes to focus straight. Eventually after some years she was able to wear corrective contact lenses since her vision was not great and she did need the correction. Also, I used to work for an optometrist and we would have babies wearing glasses for the same condition. I don't know what causes it but I do know there are ways to correct it. I hope that helps out a little for you.
