PAEDIATRIC MENINGITIS - LONG TERM EFFECTS

Post a new topicby Meggan Harti on Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:52 am

Hi, I have a three year old son who was treated for bacterial meningitis when he was 7 months old. We were later informed it was a viral strain and subsequently he lost his hearing. Fortunately when he was about 18 months old his hearing came back. We discovered recently that he has poor vision (+ 12 in both eyes), which came as quite a shock. It did however explain common traits that one only notices after the obvious was pointed out. His disinterest in television, drawing, holding objects very close to his eyes.He has been prescribed with glasses now which haven't had much effect yet and has begun stammering, seeming to be frustrated at not getting the right words out. I have visited my paediatrician who has requested a serious of investigations (which sadly in the UK NHS) will take some time. Like every mother, we want answers now. In her letter of referrel she mentions he may have a problem with parrallel processing, which will be assessed at the children's hosptial. My problem is time. I am concerned that each week that passes, something may be happening in his brain. I understand that the field of people we need to see is wide from neurologists etc. I have seen a Ophthalmologist who merely confirmed his prescription. I now move on and wait to hear who I see next.

Can anyone assist with advise on who I should be contacted to actually get a proper diagnosis from. I have read that he may need CT scan, what type of consultant would over this aspect of it and what can I do to hurry the process on.

Any advice would be appreciated. He is the most wonderful little boy but is not seeing colours, identifying shapes, has never slept well, has unexplained tantrums amongst other things.

From a concerned mum.
