Assumptions

Post a new topicby Emily89 on Fri Sep 12, 2008 11:25 am

Hi my name is Emily, my dad is 50 years old and has just been diagnosed with MS this earlier this year. His first attack was when his eye swelled up and went red and he could not see properly also he had muscle weakness and felt tired. The medication he was given made him feel tired, sick and gave him very bad head aches. He suffered a relapse on Wednesday 09 of this month, and this time the symptoms resembled those of a stroke When i mentioned this, i then found that my dad had not had a lumbar puncter or spinal tap to diagnose him, which i have been told is the main way of diagnosing MS. As his mum (my nan) has MS too, i feel they are just assuming that my dad has it too. Should i question the doctor's diagnosis? please respond asap i would like some advice from people who know! thank you.

My daughter, who is only 18 has been diagnosed with MS in April. She is seeing a neurologist that specializes in MS. When she was in the diagnosis stage, Dr. K, stated that doing spinal tap is no longer the best test for MS. He told us that he hasnt done a tap in many years since they have discovered MRI to be more effective. So MRI is the route my daughter took and sure enough there it was plain as day on the films. Good luck to you and your dad. Hope everything goes well

Thank you very much for replying to my post. I am glad that is the case and not that my dad is not getting the right treatment he needs. I found the information you provided me with very useful. Thank you and good luck to you and your daughter.

I would question the diagnosis. What tests were used to come up with the diagnosis? That is SO important! I agree with you. I would make an appointment with a neurologist as soon as possible. Good luck to you and your dad. Chelsea in IL

MRI was the main test used for diagnosis. She is seeing a neurologist that specializes in MS. He also ordered several blood tests to rule out other things. She has typical MS symptoms. He showed us the MRI films and the plague on her spine was plain as day
