Aspiration Pneumonia with MGRecently I have been choking alot. It happens when I eat or drink and the stuff gets into my lungs. I choke until I empty the contents of my stomach ( if you have a more acceptable way to describe losing your cookies, I'd love to hear it). Anyway, I was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia If you think breathing was difficult with MG you should try it with pneumonia I didn't realize that the choking could result in this situation. Not sure how to avoid it in the future. Anyone have any suggestions?
Re: Aspiration Pneumonia with MGYou should have a swallowing study done to determine how effectively you're transiting food down the gullet. If you are having troubles they can try different diets and yes some are yucky. If you cannot safely take in food they can place a temporary nasogastric tube (yucky again) to pass nutrition through. If the NG tube causes problems (they can be gaggy) they can place a gastric tube or jejunal tube directly through your abdomen into the stomach or upper gut for direct feedings.
You do not want to toy around with aspiration pneumonia's. They can be very hard on the lungs and you don't want your lungs compromised. Aspiration can and does happen with MG so your doctors should be on board with these options.
