MG and Sleep Apneia

Post a new topicby Capt. Larry on Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:48 am

I was diagnosed with MG and started on mestanon 8 months ago. About 2 months ago I started having difficulty sleeping. Go to sleep as soon as my head hits the pillow but wake up 2 to 3 hours later with a coughing fit, impaired breathing, and wheeze. Get up, cough up the phlem, symptoms goes away but can't go back to sleep. Sit in recliner for 3 hours, go back to sleep and the cycle begins again. Get up in the morning exhausted.

My GP thinks its reflux so he sent me to my gastro guy. He puts me on ranitidine to be taken when I go to bed. Been on that for a couple days now but no change in sleeping problems. Maybe the Rx just needs a while to kick in. Seeing my primary tomorrow.

Since I take my pyridostigamine every 4 hours during the day (30 mg) and of course none at night I am wondering if this is mg induced. Maybe I need to take 60mg when I go to bed... Have a call in to my neurologists to see what he thinks.

Anyone have any experience in this area? I did watch a Utube vid on sleep problems and mg which seemed to point to MG as my problem...

hi capt larry,
i was dx with mg about 7 yrs ago. i had a thymectomy about 5 yrs ago. i am on mestanon 60mgs three times daily, but dble morning dosage when necessary. i also am taking an expectorant guaifenesin to help loosen phlegm. this seems to be working for me. you may want to check with your neuro as it might help.
i still don't know when i will get a good night's sleep so i have sleep a aid at hand to use if i can't turn the head off when the time comes. i only use the sleep meds when all else fails, but it's a comfort just to know it's there.
of course every case is different so your neuro will have to make that call.
hope this helps. good luck.

Thanks Gary,
Since last post I've been diagnosed with pretty bad reflux. Making appt. today for a gastro guy to put me under and go down to see what's up in that area. Always something hay :)

Have a great day guy!

Interesting, I also have psoriasis. I've had it for over 20 years, but never heard of it being related to MG. How did you know this?

I had a mild case of reflux, that I actually didn't realize what it was. After a chiropractic adjustment, it went away.
