Can the nerve damage be reversed?

Post a new topicby livingwith on Fri May 29, 2009 8:22 pm

I have had peripheral neuropathy since about 1992. It was not properly diagnosed until 1997 after I was diagnosed with both types of Lupus It took 5 more years to find a medication that would give me some relief. The first one was Neuronton, but evenutally it was not working. I am now taking Lyrica which has worked well enough to let me sleep at night but still the numbness and tinkling comes on before it is time to take the next dose. I was just wondering if it would do any good to change ...Read the full article

Hello, I suffer from neuroapthy in my thighs, stemming from degenerative nerves in my lumbar region of my back. I know of a new medication called Nucynta that will be available late June 09'.
I'm going to give it a try. It is a combo med. It might be helpful in your needs.
As for regenerating nerve damage, the 1st thing is what is causing or caused the nerve damage, then under circumciristances, different situation can yield some results. I have nerve damage in the left arm, do to cervical surgery and I have Not been able to reverse it. I also as mentioned have thigh weakness which I'm presently reseaching as to how to slow down or stop the degeneration .. I'm a 46year old male with active children. If you find anything new please share it. Nerve data is hard to come by.
Checking neurologist in learning hospitals might guide you to a neurologist who has an interest in you subject. Check their training, publications and research before trying them out.
The very best

Hi David....
I am a newbie here. I also have Neropathy caused by nerve damage in my lumbar section....L4 & L5.
I have rods and screws in my spine and also have scar tissue from the surgery impenging on the nerves.
I have savage pain in both legs from my knees down into my feet.
On the 4th. of June I had an SCS implant.(spinal cord stimulator) It has reduced my leg pain by 100% and my savage foot pain by 50%!! I still must take narcotics for the break thru pain but for the first time in 5 years i am almost pain free!! The stimulator is not a cure but a treatment. You trade one sensation(pain) for another sensation(tingling) I will take the tingling any day to the pain!!
I was close to being in a wheel chair because of the pain but now I feel almost normal. I say almost normal because normal people do not tingle or have a battery in their backs that has to be recharged every week. Sometimes i feel like a wind up toy.LOL
Have you looked into an SCS implant for your pain or is your pain being controled by narcotics? I was on very high doses of narcotics but have cut what i take by half!!
As for nerve damage being reversed I do not thing it can be done. If it is caught in time and the cause addressed it can be stopped from getting worse. Mine is permanent.
Good luck to you and may the sun always shine for you.
