Peripherial Neuropathy

Post a new topicby livingwith on Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:47 pm

I retired from the military in 2006 and 3 years prior to that is when my feet started burning going numb, and felt like pin pricks under my feet near my toes. The pain has progressively gotten worse over the years and I have been to 3 Neurologists with no end in sight. I have taken everything from Cymbalta, Lyrica, Carbitrol, Neuroton, Nortryptyline and a host of others. I have taken vitamins and magnesium as well. My feet right now feel like I have been walking on hot asphalt; that stinging sen...Read the full article

Hi,
Except for the drugs you have tried, which I have not, I could have written the first paragraph (however, I wasn't in the military). My feet are exactly as you describe. I have had problems since 2006; no known cause for the neuropathy. Therefore, I can't really help you much, but just to let you know I suffer with the same thing. The night time pain is horrible.
I have been from Dr. to Dr. and none know what to do. I get disgusted with going round and round and getting no answers.

I hope you can find something to help you. If you do, please let us know.

I suffer from Neuropathy as well. I don't know what type I have but I am going to a neurosurgeon for a biopsy. The neurosurgeon will do a biopsy of my skin and nerves to see if I have a certain type. if so i can receive IV treatments to hopefully get rid of the neuropathy. The treatments might only relieve the neuropathy or maybe not help at all. You receive 5 IV treatments that cost between $20,000 to $30,000 a treatment. If anyone has information on this procedure please share with us your experience and any information you have.
Thanks,
Diane

I am currently in the military and I have the same thing you do I have not gone to get it checked out I just deal with it but my feet are very sensitive and I just get sudden pain in them... They are numb, burning, and hurt all the time no relief unless I take a pain pill or alcohol lol.... What should I do if you have had no luck and I have been wearing combat boots for 14yrs. Someone mentioned to me Fibromyalgia??? Please tell me what you think!

Well, I finally got a referral to UNC in Chapel Hill and was surprised when the doctor prescribed a topical ointment that contains some of the medicine I have been ingesting with no luck. I was skeptical, but went ahead and found a drug store that could compound the medicine. I am now on the 4th month and this stuff works. If you have tried medicine with side effects, give this stuff a try. Talk to your neurologist and give it a shot. Calvin

Calvin - Is it possible for you to put another post on this site with information telling what the meds were that the concoction was made of? I'm sure if I were to see a neurologist without this information it would be a futile effort. I, for one, am desperate for help and it sounds like you may be on to something. Will wait for your reply. Thanks

Here ya go and please let me know how it works for you:

Ketamine 10%
Gabapentin 6%
Amitriptyline 2%
clonidine 0.2%
And it is formulated into a cream that you rub into your feet.

Calvin - Thanks so much for the info on the drugs. I will definitely pursue it. My biggest question is the percentages. Like 10% of what. Will the durgist know what this means?. Also, how long does it take for the concoction to dry after using it? Was it hard to find a pharmacist that would mix this into a cream? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Thanks for the suggestion Calvin, I've been trying to find a topical treatment for neuropathy for my mother who has developed neuropathy from chemo treatments. She is now off the treatments and in remission for a couple of months but the side affects are still there and I feel helpless. I hope her MD will prescribe this for her and the pharmacy is willing to make it.

Thanks again

You have to find a pharmacy that can mix the stuff. If your neurologist gives you the prescription, the pharmacist that compounds the cream will know. What I sent you was exactly what was written on mine. Ask for a small container first to see if it works so you don;t waste your money if it doesn't.
