can't flex big toe/ toe drag

does anyone have experience with this problem? my 14 yr old son can't flex his left big toe. It has been going on for 6 months with no injury to area. Went to dr and was diagnosed with unexplained peripheral nerve damage. MRI was negative to find cause of damage to nerve. Also has weak ankle flexion, so not just toe. But he does have sensory function. Dr. referred us to another neurologist who may want to do invasive procedure to find cause of damage.
