Epilepsey: joe

Post a new topicby joe on Fri Sep 21, 2007 1:04 pm

Hi, i am a 47 year old man who has had grandmal seizures since the age of five years old, this message
is for any neurologist, who may know why when blood levels are taken for phenobarbatal and dilantin
levels, they come back very low, between the range of 0-5, the amounts being taken are 7 - 100 mgs
of dilantin per day and 2 - 30 mg tablets of phenobarbatal per day. I have not been able to get a honest
answer from the neurologists which i have seen in the past, and the one that i am seeing now.

The only reason that they can give me is that i am not taking my meds, however since i do take my
meds, and haven't had a seizure in the past four years you detirmine who is telling the truth and who
is lying, all i want is someone out their to tell me what is causing the levels to be so low, and how or
what can i do to fix this problem.

There are patients that are hypermetabolizers of phenytoin (Dilantin). Phenytoin is metabolized in the liver. Phenobarbital has been shown to induce liver microsomal enzymes, which can alter the metabolism of other drugs. Phenobarbital is also metabolized in the liver. So anything that revs up the liver can lead to low levels.
