Please help!! How do I help my mother with this?I've watched my mother suffer with cripling arthris for 40 years, not being able to open jars, walk without hurting, going through knee replacement and now dealing with neuropathy(which is the worst of all). She is 81 years old and had a knee replacement in January 2009, healing great and now all of a sudded her feet start stinging, feeling numb and now stabbing pains which she ends up crying all of the time, her foot is swollen sooo bad it looks like it wants to burst. She went to a doctor and my sister was very upset with him and so was my mom. They said he acted like he didnt beleive her and said it just dont start up all of a sudden(very rude). He ordered a nerve test(done by him). She really dont want to go see him again, but we have convenced her to see him just this one time and we will find her someone else to go too. She goes May 8 for the nerve test, but It kills me to see her in so much pain and I cant do anything about it. Please help me. What can I do?
Re: Please help!! How do I help my mother with this?Your mother is so lucky to have family like you. There is nothing you can do but give your love and support. I got RSD after my surgery on my back and of course the burning and tingling started when I woke up from surgery. My Dr had the same attitude as yours did. I went thru his "rudeness" for 2 years before I went somewhere else. Although the pain is still there at least when I go to the Dr, I know that it will not be as miserable. Please just be patient with your mom, the burning can be unbearable. I wish I could help with that, but all i did/do is cry also. Have a good day!

Re: Please help!! How do I help my mother with this?I feel so sorry for your Mother. I also suffer from Neruopathy so I know how savage the pain can be. Love her heart.
Neuropathy pain can be worse at night and I found that if I elevate my feet and legs it helps to ease the pain. I fold up blankets to lay my feet and legs on at night and on top of the blankets I lay a pillow. This also helps reduce the swelling. Although I now have a spinal cord stimulator implant that has reduced my leg pain by 100% and my foot pain by 50% I still elevate my legs at night. Neuropathy can come on overnight or take years to develope as mine did. If her Neuropathy is caused by low vitamin B12 then injections can help but if not then they will not do her pain any good. I have to take vitamin B12 injections and it does nothing for my Neuropathy pain although they do help in other ways, There are different types of Neuropathy and can be brought on by a number of things and there are times no cause can be found, but that does not mean you aren't in savage pain!! I do wish I could be more help to your dear Mother. She needs to see Neurologist to run tests to find out why she developed this condetion and treat it. She may need to go to a Pain Clinic. The Neurologist can refer her to one. I know your heart aches for her and if you could you would gladly take her pain yourself. Please give her a hug for me and tell her I understand. She is not alone. May the sun always shine on her. Patsy BTW....Before I had my spinal cord stimulator implant I was on 40mg of Oxycodone ER every 12 hours and 10mg Percoset three times a day for break thru pain. Now, with my implant I only take 20mg Oxycodone IR every 6 hours for the savage break thru foot pain. Isn't that wonderful?? Neuropathy pain is very hard to treat coz it is so severe and constant.
