"my body didn't read the manual"

Post a new topicby docmon on Thu Jun 18, 2009 5:52 pm

That's actually what my doc said after hearing the symptoms I was developing a couple of years ago.

I've had a neuropathy in my feet for over 15 years. It mainly consists of pinprick or tingling feelings in my feet that makes them itch or hurt (depending on the intensity). The neuropathy has slowly progressed, now developing in my hands a bit.

But a couple of years ago, the neuropathy moved to a place it shouldn't go: my head. My scalp itches constantly from tingling that has spread to my whole head. I can only manage to not walk around looking like a severe lice case by covering my scalp with Lanacane nearly daily. I take Lyrica & Tegretol (my doc's weaning me off that for the Lyrica). But I've found no relief. Has anyone had any experience like this?

I've also begun to have random pinpricks or burning sensations on areas like my shoulder blades or knee. I don't understand that either.

Have you had a lumbar mri? Pinched nerves can cause those kinds of symptoms.
Have you tried T-gel shampoo for the head itch? It's has coal tar in it and some kind of acid. I use it every 3 days and it takes the itch completely away for me.

Have you tried neurontin for neuropathy symptoms?

The itching in my head is the same kind of itching I get in my feet - tingly and beneath the skin, not on it, so that scratching never really relieves it. That's how I know it's neurological and not a scalp disorder. But I did try some medicated shampoo for the heck of it, but no change.

I've had a biopsy that confirmed the peripheral neuropathy. I would imagine a pinched nerve would cause pain along with any other symptoms, esp. if you have the symp. (the head tingling) for a couple of years, wouldn't it?

I've never heard of neurontin. No doc of mine has ever mentioned it. And I just saw my doc last week, so it'll be a while before I'm back. It's come up a lot in just the few posts I've read, so I'm rather surprised.

Yes, a pinched nerve can cause many symptoms, as I have learned myself. The MRI of my lumbar showed 3 bulging discs and a pinched nerve. The S1? The throbbing, stinging, burning, pins/needles and "sand in my socks" feelings, they think, are all caused by the pinched nerve.

I have been doing therapy on my lower back and also had a lumbar steroid injection, which helped for all of a week. They say that I should try the shots again and it could last longer and the shot also shrinks the inflammed nerves in that area.

I'm not sure if the neurontin is helping as much as I would like, but I've only been on it for 2 weeks. I'll give it a little longer I guess.

I hope all goes well for you :)
