Trigeminal Neuropathy

Help! I'm new to this diagnosis. One year ago it started out with isolated numbness in my cheek. Now, it involves one-half of my face with numbness and pain. The pain is mostly triggered by chewing. It's the kind of pain that will put you to your knees. I've been through ever possible test imaginable, was on Neurotin for awhile until that didn't work anymore and now I'm on Tegretol. It seems to be helping but for how long? This is effecting my entire life. Any suggestions out there? The doctors say it's rare, something that can't be fixed. Is that true?
