eyesight problem after having NPH shunt

Post a new topicby Pete H on Wed Sep 17, 2008 1:43 pm

I received a NPH shunt in May. I have had great results with mobility and most of my other symptons went away. But now I seem to be having trouble focusing, especially when I read. I am still having my shunt adjusted and it seemed to get worse after I had it adjusted yesterday. Now I am wondering if it might be the result of pressing on the valve or other pressure on my head on the side where the shunt is located. I am wondering if others with shunts have had subsequent eyesight problems. Thanks, Pete

Pete:

We just had the shunt put in place for my father in law and he said his vision was a little blurry. He is still on and off getting headach and sometime a slight pain in the stomach area. How long did it take before you saw results like when they did the spinal tap? Did you experience any other slight problems along the way? How many adjustment have you had since May??
Thank YOu

I experienced balance improvement within one day after surgery. I have had an estimated 6 adjustments to my shunt pressure setting. All of these have been related to trying to improve my eyesight problems which still persist approx 16 months following surgery. I had stomach soreness for an estimated 6 months following surgery which I attribute to the outflow tube which exits somewhere in the abdomen area. My personal experience has been having the most/best improvement in reducing problems within the first month or so. I am still better than before surgery but the vision problem makes the balance issue more difficult to evaluate. Hope you get some good progress in the near future. Thanks for your input.

Regards
Pete
