Walking

I was diagnosed about 4 months ago, I am a 61 year old male. I have not gone on meds yet I am trying to hold off but I don’t think it’s going to be long. My hands shake when I try to eat drink, or write or do anything close up. Recently I have noticed while walking my left leg will want to, from the knee down kinda kick out in front of me and I don’t seem to be able to control it, does anyone else experience this?

Dear Larry,

First let me say the fact that you are staying active by walking is wonderful. My father was diagnosed over a year ago and went from a runner for 35 years to now walking as well. Because of ankle arthritis than the Parkinson's. But he does not get the symptom you described. It sounds to me like some type of freezing with is common with PD. My father also has not taken the medication as of yet. But I know the medication is supposed to help with these symptoms. I wish you the best and consider taking the medication, even though the side effects are not great, it may really help.
