children with ParkinsonsIs it possible my daughter, who was diagnosed over three years ago with sydemham's chorea, could really have parkinsons? Sydemham's should be gone by now. Her doctors are stumped. They say that children do not get parkinsons but a special ed teacher tells me that they do and she teaches some. Both of my daughter's doctors say they have never seen parkinsons in children, but is that just because it is so rare. Please help us out. I have searched the sites and do not find anything to describe what she has going on other than the adult symptoms of parkinsons. She is 14 and became ill at 11 after a perfect healthy adolesence. Thank you
Re: children with ParkinsonsI am sorry your chidl is having troubles. I would certainly have her see a movement disorders specialist if she is still having any neurological symptoms. Parkinsons disease can occur in younger individuals in the late 20's 30's etc,(not common) but would be very unusual in someone her age. It is important that she undergo a full neurological exam to determine what the likely problem is, and how to treat it so she can resume her normal adolescence. Good luck.

Re: children with ParkinsonsIt is very possible that it could be parkinsons. A lot of Docotrs will argue the fact that she is too young. Ususally because of the fact like you statedit is rare. In Parkinsons Disease there is the classic idiopathic Parkinsons that is diagnosed around the age of 60 - 65, then there is the rare Young-Onset PD which I Have. It is usuallay diagnose in a small number of people between the ags of 20 - to 40 years old. then the more rare of them is what is called juvenille parkinsons which although it is rare can show up in persons younger than 20 years old.
the percentages are as follows. Information is from the Parkinson Society of Canada (PSC) approxiamately 50% of Parkinsons patients are diagnosed with the disease prior to age 60 10% of patients that are diagnosed are from 20- to 40 It may talk a while but be patient and try to keep positive, things will get better for her. :)
Re: children with Parkinsonsive benn told the same thing im 17 and became ill around 14 or 15 but ive always had severe shaking/tremors in my hands since i could remember they say its not possible to have pd but if its possible at the age of 25 why not 17 or 14, i cant get anyone to listen so if u do let me know who uve seen...best of luck.
