MRI Results-I need to vent some

Post a new topicby reruho on Sat Sep 20, 2008 10:28 am

I got my MRI in mid august and returned to see the PM this week. The MRI shows two disc protrusions, arthritis and degenerative disc disease. Now the PM thinks there are two problems--the cevical discs and the RSD. He said the two symptoms overlap greatly. But he seems so focused on my neck that my RSD has taken a back burner. What is so crazy is the fact I have no neck and shoulder problems, never ever.

I am finding the appointments are a little overwhelming, especially when they present such a report with what I thought was very little explanation. I would have been so much happier if they could have said how bad or good they thought the report was. I have since read and interpeted the lingo and I have so many questions. I think most of my questions should have been covered in the appointment but weren't. I have a list of questions I am sending to them along with the suggestion of developing a patient handout for after the appointment.

One thing I am finding do frustrating is that no one thought to explore this avenue (neck issues) until 8 and1/2 months after the accident. (The PT that caused me so much pain was the one to bring it up after he saw photos from my car accident.) I started complaining about my arm hurting 2 and 1/2 months after the accident. I guess I will have to ask the question from now on, "Can there be another cause?"

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this. Any PT that is done from now on should be with a group who understands RSD. There are PT offices out there that are considered "cookie Cutter operations," meaning whatever is wrong with you you will be placed on the same type of program as the next patient coming in for treatment. This is wrong since RSD pts need to do exercises slower and this in itself takes more time in healing. PAIN IS NOT THE GAIN with RSD and I stress NOT. You are not working with a fractured foot and hurriedly exercised back on a football field. The more you aggravate your condition the worse it will become. Please remember NO ICE - cool room temp water is fine if tolerable. There are some wonderful massages, TENS, meilus therapies, cold laser treatments, and fenzian out there that could help you. Your neurologist will create the best "cocktail" for your meds to give you relieve of pain, sleep assistance, depression, spasms, etc. You might considered finding a support group in your area that you and your family can attend (should you need help seeking this let me know and I will help you). Also, a psychologist to help you calm your body to maintain the pain levels of the rsd so the stress is at arms-length from the RSD to cause this to spread. This is a very informative forum and we're glad you found us. There are also open chats where we can chat - or we can connect via email or phone. Pls remember we are here for you. This is overwhelming and a lot to handle - let's help you take one step at a time - and breathe, relax, refresh. God bless,

Layla
