Can Lexapro cause a seizure?

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Apr 23, 2003 4:07 pm

My 17-y/o daughter had what the ER physicians think was a seizure yesterday. I saw it happen, and it was not Grand Mal type but definately appeared to be a seizure. This was preceeded once by a faint spell and then the seizure She was begun on Lexapro about 2 months ago, 10mg q h.s. and was given this for major mood swings. It was hoped that the neurotransmitters would be better "directed" with this medication. This has been a great success, but is this something that could now cause seizure?

Is there a history of seizures in either your or your husband's family? Has your daughter had seizures in the past? If your daughter has had seizures in the past and they could not be enough to be classified as epilepsy, you need to let your daughter's doctor about this.Your daughter may have undiagnosed epilepsy. Get her to a neurologist as soon as possible.

No, there is no history of any type of seizure disorder on either side of our families. She has never been knocked unconscious, she was not stressed at the time and we went to the doctor immediatly. The first neurologist told my daughter after only a few minutes that she had epilepsy. One seizure means you have epilepsy? This is very confusing to me. We went for a 2nd opinion and this neuro was not as quick to state epilepsy but said a seizure is what she probably had and we will medicate, wait and watch. All this is quite unnerving, we dont know what is wrong. Thankfully her CT, MRI and ultrasounds were all normal. There is brain cancer on both sides of the immediate family so that was worrisome. She has never had seizures in the past. So what now, we just wait for another to occur? AAAAAHHHHHH! :-)

No, one seizure does not constitue epilepsy. Seizures can be brought on by heat, stress, a woman's monthly cycle, illnesses such as measles, menigitis, encephelitis, illicit drugs,( no, I do not belive or assume that your daughter is into drugs, I am sharing the info on what can cause seizures)and there are cases where the doctor does not know what cause the seizures. What is your email addy? Perhaps I can answer other questions.

Hello!
I can only tell you what happenend to me. I was put on Zoloft for mood swings,etc...while I was on this med, I started having seizures. Not one Dr told us that Zoloft had anything to do with it, but...hard to believe, you know? We have gotten so many conflicting stories from many dr's neuros, etc, it has been scarey! I did have a head injury some 7 years ago, just got knocked out, but again, they said nothing about it.
Has she had an EEG yet? Now, even if it comes back normal, that doesn't mean she doesn't have epilepsy, ( you see confusing) my help is this, get 2, 3, 4 opinions. Trust your instincts. Go on-line to the epilespy foundation in your area, they have lots of answers about seizure disorders, it may be possible that she may have more. They are non profit. I am 34 and was just diagnosed 2 years ago, please feel free to contact me if you need help ok? Take care ok?

I do not know about Lexapro, but you should read different drug data bases about it to see if one of the side effects is a lowering of seizure threshold. I was on Elavil for depression and was given Demerol for pain for an unrelated problem. The first day I took both I had what my family described as a tonic/clonic seizure complete with loss of consciousness. I remember some of the postictal periods when I opened my eyes and found people from my fire department standing over me. It turned out that both Elavil and Demerol both lower the seizure threshold and at least in my case caused the seizure. If your daughter is on any other medication or supplements or homeopathic substances that may be the cause in her case. Good Luck.
