First Time Seizure

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Nov 21, 2004 11:13 pm

I had my first seizure about a month ago and I am terrified of what this may do to my future. I've never had any head injuries or neurological problems. I recently found out that some medications I was prescribe for pain for an injury to my shoulder were actually anti-seizure medications. Could this in any way have lead to me actually having a seizure? And now that I've had a seizure, does this mean I'll have to stay on meds for the rest of my life? Please help!!!

Hi my name is Joe, I am 38 years old and have had seizures now for 2 years. Was the medicine you were taking Neurontin? First of all, I am sorry for your seizure, trust me, I know it's no fun and once you have had your first it's obviously normal to be scared.

Did the doc's prescribe Dilantin and or Neurontin? Whay you first need to do is find out the cause for the seizure and start by elimanating the more common causes, alcohol and or drug withdraw, illicit or prescribed. Head trauma, are you sure you did not hurt your hed when you hurt your shoulder? Make sure your DR. does an MRI and a Catscan, also remind the doc to splice the MRI to look for possible fractures, tumors or any other abnormal brain growth. Have you had a high fever recently? Make sure your doc perform a CBC, (complete Blood workup).

Life does get easier once you figure out what the cause for the seizure was.
Please be honest with your MD's and yourself plus go to a good Neurologist ASAP.. It's ok to take a step back and reflect on what just occured, also it's also ok to see a therapist or simply reach out to friends and family, also please do not be ashamed nor embarrassed to tell your friends, family, co-workers that you have experienced a seizure and make sure they know what to do in the unfortunate event it occurs again. PLEASE feel free to call on me should you have any questions, thoughts, ideas, etc... OK!!

Best wishes,

Joe :)

Hello, I'm summer, I just want you to Know that I understand or remember what it felt like when I had my first one. I have had seizures for about 14yrs. I am 24 years old and x times i worry about my future or whats ahead for me. I never got to drive a car cause of the differant types of seizures I have. I still wonder what caused them I to never had a head injury or any other head problems.

First Off from my experenice find a good dr. or neurologist. Ask around or check out how good they are.(there are a lot of quacks) Then make a appt. Make sure they do test on you for exp: MRI,CATSCAN,LIVER &KIDNEY test and ect.. Some will just ask you ? then give you meds So make sure they give you a though exam. Make sure you tell them any confusion or dizzyness or anything else you experiance. It may take awhile to figure out but give it time. Also It can not effect you future if you don't let it. Good luck with everything and remember we are always here.

Hello my name is Tonya, my mother suffers from some type of seizure disorder and they seem to be controling our lives more that we can control them. She was on Dilantin and all that seemed to do was make her very ill and sill having seizures the neurologist that she sees just would not seem to take us serious that the medication was not only not working but making her very sick. Finally after 5 months he switched her to Triliptol she was okay for just one month and now she has had another one. My question is what tests have you or other people had to find out the cause of a so called seizure disorder? I am not sure that my mother is getting the best care

hi and thank you for your kind words.. I apologize for not returning your note sooner, for some reason I just receive it.. I've been on a high dosage of Dilantin, 500 migs per day and also a light Ativant( stress Reliever)I've had all types of scans, MRI's, etc and the docs simply tell me to continue on my meds and not to stress out, easier said tham done.. It is a life altering condition, however it has really put life in perspective..

Anyway, in about 20% of the cases seizures are usually stressed induced, so whatever you do, never resort to alcohol. In most states, you can have your driving right back if you have been seizure free for 9 months. It's a condition that is controlable, however without a doubt it's not a plesant experience, not only for yourself but for friends and family members. I could go on for ever, however I will give you my own e-mail address should you want to discuss further.

Hang in there,

Joe

Hi, I am sorry to hear about your mother and her seizure disorder. Unfortuanlly, what I have encountered is that it's more difficult to the family and friends, then the actual victim. For the victim, which I am one myself obviously, it's very dishearting and at times overwhelming.

Now, I am on a high dosage of Dilantin, and yes, it does kick my butt from time to time, I also take a light sedative, xanax, adivant, whatever the md's send me to reduce the stress because that's the major cause for a seizure after you have had the first one. Is your mother having her blood levels tested on regulat basis, her levels s/b between 15 to 20..

Make sure she has a CBC test, blood test, MRI, but ask the md to slice and splice the MRI, THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT..
In my case because of a head injury, they found out I had a skull fracture which produced a vessel malformation which was cutting off the oxygen to brain and causing the seizures. I can go on for ever, but I will give you my own e-mail address to feel free to contact me at anytime.

[moderator note: e-mail address has been removed]

God bless,

Joseph Nodarse :}
