Using Keppra

Post a new topicby Guru on Sun Aug 10, 2008 1:57 pm

Tell me about this drug. I use lamictal and I have been asked to take this as well. What should I expect?

Possible uncontrolled anger (Kepprage!). It is not working for my husband who has had seizures for 24 years. But I have heard that it is the new wonder drug if the side effects are not to harsh. Good Luck

Started taking Keppra 12/16/08 in the hospital after 3 seizures. I am adjusting well but it was difficult at first. I was very dizzy and unbalanced when I first started the drug but those SE's seem to be fading. Every now and then I still feel a little off but definately better! I am a nurse and have been back to work since the following Mon after my seizures and I am doing well on the med and no more seizures!!

Sarah, I would love to hear an update on how you are doing with Keppra, and how you are handling your job as a nurse! My husband had 2 seizures New Years Day and is on Keppra, no more since then. He is in the process of increasing from 1000mg/day to 2000/day by this Sunday. It is making him very tired and unfocused and tending toward anxiety. We are wondering if/when these side effects will start to fade, and after the 6 months it will take for him to be able to drive again to work, will he be able to hold down a job? It sounds like you have adjusted amazingly fast, I would sure appreciate any details or advice!

Sorry to hear your husband is going through the same thing I am but it does get better. I have adjusted very well! So much that my boss at work noticed a big difference. I take 750mg twice daily and seems to be working well. It took me about 2 1/2 weeks to adjust where I could actually remember things and walk straight (stumbled around like a drunk person for a while). My memories during my hospital stay and memories about 2 wks after, just aren't there. I have read up on the Keppra and it seems to be the one with the least amount of side effects. I have very good support at home and here at work. I think that is one of the most important parts of recovering! Being able not to drive is a big bummer but my husband is wonderful and is my driver. Sounds like your hubby is still adjusting so give it a little more time. It definately can be frustrating not driving and feeling tired all the time but I think being back at work keeps my mind busy! I love my job and love what I do so it is very easy for me to get lost in it. My experience with the Keppra has been a good one. The dizziness has worn off and I actually feel like myself again. The more time that goes by, I am able to get back to my own routine. Hang in there! All be it very small, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Thank you so much for your answer, it does make me feel better and I will have him read it! I was wondering, what are your plans for driving again? I don't know what the state rules are where you live, here it is 6 months seizure free. Do you plan to drive again if this is the case where you are?

I had my first and so far only seizures in this past December. My Neurologist put me on Keppra 500mg 2x daily. So far I feel fine..was a little dopey at first but now feel like my self....I do fall asleep better at night usually within 2 hrs of taking my evening dose(don't know if it due to Keppra or not).

I go in hosp in Feb for VEEG to see if anything shows ..so far MRI and reg eeg show nothing.

Here in NH I can not drive until 12 months seizure free. Very frustrating as I work 2 miles from home .. Right now coworkers take turns driving me and Hubby takes me out to do all the errands I usually do alone. I work at a school so I don't have to worry about summer but it still is hard to rely on others and not feel like a pain...

When the weather improves I hope to at least walk the 2 miles home...good exercise.

So has anyone stopped taking the Keppra and had any seizures? That is my concern. My doctor wants me to take it for two years and then gradually take me off of it. I am scared though that my body will be relied on it and I will start to have seizures again. Does anyone know?

I was started on Keppra a couple months ago...the 750 time released tablets and then became pregnant (be careful...i now know that seizure meds can effect birth control effectibility! OOPS!) Any how, when i became pregnant i stopped treating my seizures because i had only had 2 and thought them to bea freak accident......i was wrong, this past sunday and monday i had 6 and between my neurologist and OB they put me back on the keppra but the 500 mg twice a day...i DESPISE the way it makes me feel! I am sure my preggo symptoms on top of the keppra don't help but the worse side effect is the fogginess...i don't really realize what i am doing and just kinda float along my daily activities begining a couple hours after i take the keppra and when i take my nightly dose the vertigo is so bad i can't fall asleep for a few hours...this i am hoping will subside...i didn't notice it so much when i took the time released tablets but my OB really wants me on the lowest dose possible for now so i am hoping the symptoms wear down....i'm a lab tech so that makes things especially difficult...i'm taking this entire week off otry and adjust and i won't be able to drive until i am 3 months seizure free which i almost was before this last stint grrr!!! I am a little concerned about the Keppra and my pregnancy as much information is not available but my mother is epileptic and was on tegretol during 4 pregnancies so i am hoping for nothing but the best :)

It put me out cold not to mention 2 other drugs i take for seizures. one is for seizure coverage abd the other is for RSD-I personally thik it is very strong medication v=but use ful for some who has multiple seizures. To this day i really do not know if i have seizures as i was passing out everyother week and someone said they witnessed a seizure, however I have teset negative 4 times. Heart doc says they wwere seizures and the nuero says its my heart how frustrating is that one.
