60 years of rarely sleeping

I am 82 and have lived as many of my family with constant sleepless nights plus only 2-3 hours at the most when I do sleep. Rarely is there ever a whole night of sleep. This disorder effects both the young and old in the family. I have always functioned with this disorder. Two doctors have told me that if I am able to function during the day without difficulty then it is OK. I do get exhausted at times and crash but rare is that.
