Diet improves my insomnia

Post a new topicby norton on Fri Nov 07, 2008 4:55 pm

I have suffered with insomnia for over five years. On occasion I have gone for three nights without any sleep whatsoever. I never have had more than four hours sleep during this time and frequently go a whole night without sleeping. I dislike taking sleeping tablets, but have resorted to them from time to time out of sheer exhaustion.
I began to experiment with my diet, sometimes eating mostly carbohydrates (oats, baked potatoes, fruit, vegetables and so on) as I have read on many times that they help the brain to produce sereotonin. However, on many nights when I have eaten those foods I find that I hardly sleep at all. My greatest success has been eating a low carbohydate (less than 50g of carbohydrate a day). I takes several days for my body to get used to eating this way, but I have found that I can consistently sleep about fours a night when I do. But when I begin to get complacent and introduce more carbohydrates into my diet each day I find that the amount of sleep goes way down.
Has anyone else found that diet has such a direct affect on their sleeping patterns?
