nerve damageDear Doctors:in late may I had and accident in which a 500LB+ liftgate fell on my left leg,I also tried to hold this liftgate with both hands to no avail.3 days later I felt severe back pain in my lower and mid back with numbness in my buttock and some parts in the back of my left leg. After 3 months and some therapy I had and M.R.I. exam on my lower lumbar spine.the result was a bulged disc at L-5 and visible nerve irritation. The orthopedic doctor informed me that surgery was not needed but put me on therapy 3 times a week for 4 weeks.after the therapy I still have numbness and pain in the same areas but not at the same degree of pain, now the pain comes and goes. After this length of time sould I need surgery or rest.Thanks.
Re: nerve damageYou may want to see a neurologist in evaluation. A careful exam can determine if there is evidence of nerve root injury, and whether other tests are needed. There are different medications that may be helpful, as well as alternative forms of therapy.
