There’s Hope - Recovered from Brain Injury

Post a new topicby livingwith on Sun Aug 19, 2007 8:21 pm

Hi. My name is Kelly. I had a car accident back in 1989 and suffered a traumatic brain injury. I was in a coma for approximately a month and a half to two months. I do not recall so I’m repeating what I’ve been told. According to my family, I was told I wouldn’t live–I’m alive; I was told I wouldn’t be normal–I’m normal; I was told I wouldn’t be able to function independently–I’m doing just fine; I was told I couldn’t go bac...Read the full article

WEll thank God, I am now dealing with my future son in law whom is only 18 yrs old in a nureo intensive care unit in Toledo Ohio. He was on his way to work in the early am he was very tired as he never got enough sleep and he fell asleep at the wheel his car ran off the road did a 360 went rear end into the trees hit the tree then fliped up and the roof was smashed in. where he was was not a place that could be easily seen. from the police report he was there about an hour before anyone noticed his car then it took emt's and whomever an hour and a half to get him of of the car. he was flown to a hospital and had to have emergency surgery as his brain was very swollen his left pupil blowed due to so much brain pressure and bleeding. they had to put a tube in his brain to drain the blood and a tube to messure the brain pressure they also had to cut a piece of his scalp off to allow room for the brain swelling. they put him in a chemically induced coma to let his brain sleep it has been a week now and they have him on a breathing machine, had him hooked up to an eeg constantly to monitor brain activity we got good news that they were taking him off the coma meds, taking the eeg off as they know he has brain activity. today I found out he has pnemonia and it's pretty bad so I am very afraid for him and I keep praying as he is so young and a good kid but at this point we don 't know much. the dr. told us it was a severe brain injury and the first 24 to 48 hours were the most critical times and he didn't know if this was even survivable. but he made it past that time frame and positive things have happend but then one good thing happens and then we find out he has pnemonia and I do know that that in itself can kill someone. I am so worried about him, can you tell me how severe your brain injury was. I know the swelling hit over 20 at times but it went down real low to about 3 and then 1. I am tore up over this and my poor daughter only 16 yrs old has stayed by his side this entire time, some say he can hear us others say he can't. do you recall ever hearing voices or remembering things. were you in a coma? sorry for asking so much would like to talk to you personally but that of course would be up to you. we could exchange phone numbers via personal email as I am clueless and due to some problems with his family now his mother stopped all but only 5 people are allowed to see him and I am not one who can which is hurting me so bad. please get back to me my email is [moderator note: e-mail address has been removed] my name is Karen from Michigan. I thank God that you beat the odds and I give all glory to god for your recovery. Take care and will be waiting to hear from you. you can view a slideshow of my daughter and James her fiance it shows them before the accident and after the accident on myspace. here is my direct url to my page [moderator note: website address has been removed] just copy and paste it in your address bar so you can see who I am talking about thanks and god bless you
