EEG says no hope for recovery

Post a new topicby littlesister on Sun Jan 20, 2008 10:46 pm

My brother had a motorcycle accident, Nov 4, he was alone. He suffers from Diffuse Axonal Injury. He has been in a long term care hospital for the last 6 weeks. We have seen many responses from him, the therapists see less. Today they gave us news that the EEG a couple of days ago shows he will never get any better than he is now. Has anyone gotten a terrible report like this from an EEG and recovered better that expected? How accurate are they? He is battling pneumonia right now, they said as soon as he recovers he have to go to a nursing facility, we are devastated. He doesn't talk, he has had a trach the whole time, but he does open his mouth to speak. He looks at us, but only follows simple commands, ie; close your eyes, open your mouth, he even sucked on an ice chip and swallowed, he has done this several times, before he had a shunt put in (3 weeks ago) he was kissing his wife when she asked. But we had felt he was doing better all the time, he always seemed to be progressing. He is fed with a feeding tube, he doesn't move his arms much. only his right arm from the elbow down, he moves his hand and fingers, he will scratch his nose if you help him get his hand up there. He moves his legs in the bed and rests his right hand on his thigh. He has many facial expressions. He looks at us some of the time, but other times he looks around us. We haven't been able to get any sort of a yes or no answer from him. Anybody have any good news for us?

I am using a personal computer with special softwafe so i can communicate using the morse code and a thumb mouse I can click to spell words. dont give up. I have been told the same thing, but its been over two years ans im getting better everyday. Iv been told the same thing your brother has, but you just have to have faith. I will be praying for your family.

How is your brother today? My brother is 51 and was in a terrible motorcycle accident on 9-4-09.He wasn't wearing a helmet and the back tire went flat while he was going down the Hwy about 60 MPH. He was recently moved to a Rehab Hospital. He sounds similar to your brother. The part of his scull they removed is still out and his head is sunken in. We don't want to lose hope. Some days he seems to show a tiny bit of improvement but other days he stays the same. We don't know if he even knows who anyone is. I hope you have something positive to tell me.
